Supporting Our Communities in the Wake of Hurricane Helene

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, our hearts continue to go out to everyone affected by such devastating events. The challenges faced by communities in regions like the Southeast, particularly North Carolina and Virginia, serve as a reminder of the resilience and strength needed to rebuild. In times like these, the compassion and concern for our neighbors shine through, and the dedication to supporting recovery efforts remains unwavering.

While the immediate crisis has subsided, our commitment to helping these communities endures. We continue to monitor ongoing needs and mobilize resources to provide long-term assistance. Our teams are focused on restoring communication, infrastructure, and vital services, ensuring communities can rebuild stronger for the future.

In the words of an emergency room doctor, disasters tend to unfold in three phases: Pressure, Uncertainty, and Meaningful Impact. Even after the uncertainty fades, the lasting impact remains—and that is where our long-term support comes in. Your empathy and dedication to aiding those affected are as crucial now as they were in the early days of recovery. We remain deeply grateful for your continued commitment to rebuilding lives and communities.

Grassroots Support Efforts

Early on, our Charlotte, Park Road, location took an inspiring initiative. They transformed the shop into a drop-off and pickup point for much-needed supplies such as water, fuel, diapers, and baby formula. The Charlotte team and customers generously volunteered their time to transport these donations directly to local relief efforts in the hardest-hit areas. Soon after, our Chapel Hill location joined the charge of accepting donations as well.

Our buyers are worked diligently to ensure that essential products like fuel, water filters, and other vital supplies were flowing steadily to where they were needed most. This coordinated effort ensured that relief teams on the ground were prepared and resourced to make a real difference. Shifting into the cooler weather, we launched our Annual Coat Drive early to collect warm clothing for those in need. Additionally, we donated to Now Serving NC to feed 625 people in need.

Our brand partner, Patagonia, collaborated on efforts to issue our community partner, Sound Rivers, a $15,000 grant to go towards relief efforts. Sound Rivers actively preserves and protects the watersheds that cover nearly one quarter of NC. These funds support their efforts of coordinating with local riverkeepers and their organizations in the WNC area.

Balancing Business and Community Impact

While our retail operations remain open, we are acutely aware of the challenges facing many communities across the region. Outfitting shops, manufacturers, and other businesses were grappling with power outages, road closures, and severe disruptions to their operations. We continue to stand in solidarity with these communities navigating the difficult process of recovery, rebuilding and reopening. And many have already reopened. Local services like The Bike Farm which provides guided mountain biking experiences in Pisgah National Forest. Follow @TrustyGOPC for timely information on openings.

Experts in the field like Wes Allen of Sunlight Sports shared perspectives on looking forward, as it is critical to the success and health of outdoor industry businesses affected. In his blog, he outlines things to do as both a business and consumer:

This disaster affected our favorite places during the time of year when they are most heavily visited. Tourism in these areas plays a vital role in their communities health and success. As we continue to support the rebuild of the impacted communities, it is also essential to remember that local businesses and attractions rely on visitors for their recovery and long-term sustainability. The NC Division of Parks and Recreation provides insight on the status and health of impacted destinations and will update when they are safe to travel back to, explore, and enjoy once again.
