WHY:
Mired in a disaster zone, travel or rural area far from a hospital, or natural area miles from an access point … accidents, destructive weather, and terrorism happen, and all-too-often members of a group are not capable of dealing with the emergency. This leads to improper care of the patient, and endangers the entire group. Many recreational accidents are preventable, and improper care of trauma can compound even simple injuries. Very few first aid programs actually address the issues of providing emergency care in a setting where 911 is overwhelmed or not immediately reachable. In this course, classroom instruction and Q&A are interwoven with practical work and problem-solving exercises. Hands-on experience – a most powerful learning tool – during scenarios comprise ~50% of class. 8:30am – 6:30pm or 7pm both days; you come away with actual do-it-yourself care-giving confidence.

TESTIMONIALS (those without names are from post-course anonymous feedback forms):

“The course blew my expectations out of the water.”

“I was … in denial about what could go wrong in a hike. I feel much more prepared now. Everyone who hikes should take this course!”

“It was the *very best* first aid I ever attended and I’ve attended many.”

“The numerous examples of hands-on practice in evaluating, moving and treating patients gave us lots of practice in applying what we learned.”

“Best instructor on the East Coast (based on 4 other courses).”

“The encyclopedia knowledge of the instructor. The instructor’s willingness to address questions, and willingness to provide individualized attention.”

“When I walked in the door, the idea of being responsible for someone in a backcountry {or disaster} medical emergency was terrifying. Now I feel confident that I can help.”

“I came upon a motorcycle accident with 3 injured people. I was able to preserve their lives because of my SOLO training.” – 2-day course graduate Jacquie W., 10/31/2013

“Shortly after receiving my WFA cert … I was one of the first to arrive at the rolled SUV and assessed the scene. Most of the emergent volunteers were milling around the SUV, wondering what to do … I took control to treat her … Police and fire/rescue had not yet arrived, although plenty of 911 calls went out … I credit being able to successfully treat my ‘patient’ to your WFA training.” Ian K., 6/5/2008

“Take the class, Save a life!”

Paddlesports Orientation (For Customers Who Have Purchased a Boat) @ Oak Hollow Lake

Thank you for buying your Canoe, Kayak or SUP from Great Outdoor Provision Co!

We realize you have many options for your purchase and want to offer our customers a special perk for doing business with us. This spring we’ll be offering free, informal Canoe, Kayak & SUP Orientation for folks who bought their boat or board from us – conveniently located near some of our busiest shops. While this is not intended as formal instruction, we will show you the basics of getting safely launched on the water and briefly cover some basic concepts such as proper posture, getting good traction between paddle blade and the water, using torso rotation for proper technique and maintaining good balance.  We’ll tailor our time for your particular type of watercraft (i.e., we’ll customize your orientation depending on whether you bought a Fishing Kayak or a SUP) or your area of interest. You’ll get about 30 minutes of informal instruction –all for free and all because you bought your boat/board from us.

Please register for our On-Water Paddlesports Orientation in advance by emailing gopc601@greatoutdoorprovision.com with your name and the model of boat or board you recently purchased from us. Please note that our On-Water Paddlesports Orientation is only available to customers who purchased their Canoe, Kayak or SUP from Great Outdoor Provision Company within the past 12 months. There is no charge.

Any weather-related cancellation of this event will be announced via @GreatOutdoorWinston on Instagram.  Follow these feeds for updates.

Bring your boat or board that you recently purchased from us and your own paddle and PFD. You’ll also have an opportunity to try a different paddle or PFD if you wish. You are also welcome to stay for the Afternoon Boat Demo, which will be taking place at the same venue immediately after the Orientation.

Triad-Area Boat Demo @ Oak Hollow Lake

Please register for our boat demo in advance by emailing gopc601@greatoutdoorprovision.com with the boats you are interested in (if applicable).   Please note that if a specific boat or board is not in our demo fleet we will not be able to bring it to the event.

Any weather-related cancellation of this event will be announced via @GreatOutdoorWinston on Instagram.  Keep an eye on these feeds for updates.

This spring we’ll be offering free, informal kayak & canoe demonstrations conveniently located near some of our busiest shops. This is a great opportunity to try out a boat in an environment that is informational, informal and presented at no charge.

Our Afternoon Boat Demos are geared towards customers who have already narrowed down their choices after visiting one of our shops and feel that some on-water time prior to purchase is necessary. However, we also welcome folks who are just curious about kayaks & canoes and want to try it out in a low pressure environment.

Folks unable to attend one of our scheduled on-water demo events can inquire with their local shop regarding a fee-based demo.   As for specific boats, in addition to any particular models from an attending manufacturer, we’ll bring some of our most popular boats and boards that are best suited for flatwater, fitness, fishing and all-round use. However, please let us know in advance if there is a particular boat or board in our demo fleet you would like to try and we will do our best to get it to the lake. Please note that if a boat or board is not in our demo fleet, we will not be able to bring it to the event.

25 Top Hikes in the Triad Area

Looking for a good place to hike? In the Triad you needn’t look far. Here’s a rundown...

Winston-Salem is heaven for the avid outdoorsman. We have both lakes and rivers, allowing for a variety of daytime trips, from paddling the frisky Dan River to fishing right in town at Salem Lake.  Our incredible staff members cite Hanging Rock State Park as one of their favorite places in the country for climbing and exploring. There are seven miles of natural trail way around Salem Lake, and Pilot Mountain and the Sauratown Trail are great options if you have a bit more time.

We here at Great Outdoor Provision Co. want you to take advantage of everything Winston-Salem has to offer – even the things you don’t know about yet! Our manager, Darren Schwartz, and his staff have worn paths in many of the trails around Winston-Salem, from the most popular to the obscure, can’t-even-find-it-on-the-Internet places. We don’t mean for these best-kept secrets to stay secret, though! At our store, we’re more than happy to share all of the knowledge we’ve gathered with you.

Throughout our adventures, we have spent time testing several of the products in our store. You may not realize that the backpack that feels great when you wear it for five minutes in the store will rub your sides raw after eight hours on the trail. That’s where we come in. We’ll tell you what has worked for us and what hasn’t, so you can make an educated decision about your outdoor purchases. Come check out our store at the Thruway Shopping Center – we can’t wait to see you!
