On Saturday, November 3rd, the 2007 Wrightsville Beach Sea Kayak Race went off in the wake of Hurricane Noel. Predicted wind gusts of 20+ kept the faint of heart away, but the dedicated once again came out for a great event. Fifty-two racers were treated to tempertures in the mid-sixties and winds out of the northwest at 15 mph. All proceeds from the race benefit the NC Coastal Land Trust, a local non-profit that works hard to preserve our coastal environment. Race proceeds totals have not been finalized, but will be over $2000. The race started soundside across from the Blockade Runner Hotel and was composed of a 6-mile main event, a 3-mile fun race and a 500-meter sprint for kids. Hurricane Kayaks gave away a $900 kayak in the after event raffle along with $2000 in other outdoor gear that was aquired by Great Outdoor Provision Co., one of the two main sponsors of the race. Salt Marsh Kayak Company hosted and organized the race.
