Supporting Our Communities in the Wake of Hurricane Helene

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, our hearts go out to everyone impacted by this devastating event. Our thoughts are with the communities of the Southeast, especially those in North Carolina and Virginia, who are now facing immense challenges. In times like these, the compassion and concern for our neighbors are evident, and your dedication to supporting them during this difficult time does not go unnoticed.

As the situation continues to unfold, we are actively monitoring developments and mobilizing our resources to provide meaningful assistance where it is needed most. Our teams are preparing to help restore communication and infrastructure as communities begin the long journey toward recovery.

In the words of an emergency room doctor, disasters tend to unfold in three phases: Pressure, Uncertainty, and Meaningful Impact. Right now, we are in the critical transition between uncertainty and impact, where our focus shifts toward determining how best to support those affected. Your empathy and dedication during this uncertain time are invaluable, and we are deeply grateful for your commitment.

Grassroots Support Efforts Underway

Over the past weekend, the staff at our Charlotte, Park Road, location has taken an inspiring initiative. They have transformed the shop into a drop-off point for much-needed supplies such as water, fuel, diapers, and baby formula. The Charlotte team has generously volunteered their time to transport these donations directly to local relief efforts in the hardest-hit areas.

Our support doesn’t stop there. Our buyers are working diligently to ensure that essential products like fuel, water filters, and other vital supplies are flowing steadily to where they are needed most. This coordinated effort ensures that relief teams on the ground are prepared and resourced to make a real difference. Additionally, we’ve donated to Now Serving NC to feed 625 people in need.

Our brand partner, Patagonia, collaborated on efforts to issue our community partner, Sound Rivers, a $15,000 grant to go towards relief efforts. Sound Rivers actively preserves and protects the watersheds that cover nearly one quarter of NC. These funds support their efforts of coordinating with local riverkeepers and their organizations in the WNC area.

Balancing Business and Community Impact

While our retail operations remain open, we are acutely aware of the challenges facing many communities across the region. Outfitting shops, manufacturers, and other businesses are grappling with power outages, road closures, and severe disruptions to their operations. We stand in solidarity with these communities as they navigate the difficult process of recovery and rebuilding.

This disaster affected our favorite places during the time of year when they are most heavily visited. Tourism in these areas plays a vital role in their communities health and success. As we continue to support the rebuild of the impacted communities, the NC Division of Parks and Recreation provides insight on the status and health of impacted destinations and will update when they are safe to travel back to, explore, and enjoy once again.

Experts in the field like Wes Allen of Sunlight Sports shares perspectives on looking forward, as it is critical to the success and health of outdoor industry businesses affected. In his blog, he outlines things to do as both a business and consumer:

How You Can Help

For those who want to contribute directly, we recommend supporting the following organizations. These groups have the expertise, personnel, and strong municipal relationships necessary to drive effective relief efforts in the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Helene.

In times of crisis, it is our collective action that brings hope and healing. Together, we can make a meaningful impact on the lives of those affected by this disaster. Thank you for your unwavering support and compassion. We Help Others.

At the heart of our mission is the belief that while we explore the world, we unite as a community. Our initiative, EXPLORE Global. Unite Local,” embodies this very principle. In moments like these, as we face challenges at home, it becomes clear that the strength of our local bonds is just as vital as our global adventures. By standing together and helping those around us, we honor the spirit of this message—coming together locally to build a brighter, more resilient future for all.
