The trails in this section of the Pisgah District of the Pisgah National Forest are open to hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. From here, you can hike up to Mount Pisgah (you can mountain bike or horseback ride most of the way, but the last stretch to the top is limited to hiking). A loop heading up Trace Ridge gives horseback riders and mountain bikers the opportunity to head up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. And you can hook into the vast trail network out of the adjoining Davidson River area.

If you’re planning to make a weekend out of your North Mills River visit, you’d be well advised to head up after work Friday and pitch camp in the dark so you’ll have two full days to explore. Only a 40-minute drive from Asheville, a little over two hours from Charlotte.
