Shenandoah National Park
Milepost 57.5, Skyline Drive

Loft Mountain with roughly 200 sites is the largest campground in the Shenandoah National Park; about 20 miles to the north is Lewis Mountain, which with just 31 sites and tents-only covenants, is the smallest. As such, it appeals to folks looking for more of a backwoods feel without the backpack. It’s along the Appalachian Trail, and just seven miles down the road from the Big Meadows area, which includes three waterfalls and some of the best hiking in the Shenandoah, including several options for day-hike loops.
