Springer’s Point Preserve on Ocracoke Island
Ocracoke Island
Come see where Blackbeard spent his final hours and help the North Carolina Coastal Land Trust maintain Springer’s Point Preserve for thousands of visitors each summer. The Land Trust needs volunteers to help re-route part of an existing, eroded trail. No trail building experience is necessary.
An island within an island, Springer’s Point is a peaceful oasis of natural beauty in the heart of bustling Ocracoke Village on Ocracoke Island. The Preserve encompasses more than 120 acres of maritime forest, tidal red cedar forest, salt marsh, wet grasslands and sound-front beach. The Preserve offers visitors the perfect spot to bird-watch, hike or just sit on the beach overlooking the Pamlico Sound. Springer’s Point also boasts a vibrant history. Historically referred to as “Teach’s Plantation,” the site is the reputed favorite hunt of the legendary pirate, Blackbeard, who met his fate at Teach’s Hole off Springer’s Point. The Coastal Land Trust completed the purchase of Springer’s Point in 2006 to save it from imminent development. Overwhelming community support enabled the Coastal Land Trust to restore the Point’s maritime forest, construct Preserve amenities, hire a local Preserve Steward, and open the Preserve free to the public.
