WINNER! - The Piedmont Regional Greenway
The Piedmont Greenway will be a 19-mile, multi-use trail connecting Guilford and Forsyth counties through Triad Regional Park and downtown Kernersville. The trail will follow waterways, ridge tops and roadways, and will connect neighborhoods, parks, cultural and historic sites, schools, commercial districts, and natural areas. Trail use will include walking, running, jogging, bicycling and possibly horseback riding. This resource will protect the environment, encourage healthy living, provide opportunities for outdoor recreation and non-motorized transportation, strengthen the local economy, and preserve culturally and historically valuable areas. We need your help to build the partnerships to complete this amazing resource.
First Island, Deep River (Chatham County)
The Deep River State Trail was designated in 2007 as the newest state park unit, with canoe and kayak access at its core. Triangle Land Conservancy (TLC) has conserved almost 3,000 acres on the Deep, much of it becoming part of the new State Trail. Our latest target is First Island, a beautiful potential canoe-camping destination. First Island is a Natural Heritage Site and home to several rare animal species, the Gorgas Mill ruins, and one of the earliest African-American settlements in Chatham County. TLC needs your help to protect this special place.
Town Creek Riparian Forest
North Carolina Coastal Land Trust
Anyone who has ever paddled or explored the pristine waters, marshes and swamps of Town Creek waterway in Brunswick County recognizes its unmatched beauty and recreational opportunities. The Coastal Land Trust quickly realized this area was coming under increased development pressure from Myrtle Beach, SC, and Wilmington, NC. The Coastal Land Trust has protected more than 6,000 acres at Town Creek, including a 900-acre tract to be used as a nature park. This summer the Coastal Land Trust is working to protect three new, strategically important tracts at Town Creek and needs your help to complete these projects!
The Terra Nova Center
Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy
The Terra Nova Center has been a good neighbor to DuPont State Forest since 1992. The Center’s 220-acre campus in southeast Transylvania County helps maintain the quality of Reasonover Creek, which flows into DuPont Forest and Lake Julia. The property also contains a rare and special natural community. Unfortunately, in order to fund necessary repairs to its dam, the Terra Nova Center must sell a portion of its property. Rather than selling to a developer, Terra Nova is committed to conserving their land by working with Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy, which is raising money to complete this project with Terra Nova.
Tar River Paddle Trail
Tar River Land Conservancy needs your help to acquire a new paddle trail access site on the Tar River! The Tar River Paddle Trail is unique in the state: It traverses 150 miles through some of North Carolina’s most pristine natural areas and scenic rural countryside. It also connects the historic riverfront communities of Louisburg, Rocky Mount, Tarboro and Greenville. This new paddle trail access site will not only enhance the public’s enjoyment and appreciation of the river, it will help us protect water quality, wildlife habitat and the scenic river corridor.
Rocky Fork
Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy
The Rocky Fork project, just 34 miles from Asheville, is ranked as the No. 1 priority nationwide for acquisition by the U.S. Forest Service. The 10,000 acre Rocky Fork tract is connected to 22,000 acres of protected land. It offers Appalachian Trail hikers a new favorite place for fly-fishing, hiking, mountain-bike riding, bird-watching and more. The Conservation Fund, partnering on the project with the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy, has secured the site with an option to buy the entire $40 million tract. SAHC needs your help to close the deal.
Pond Mountain
Blue Ridge Rural Land Trust, National Committee for the New River,
High Country Conservancy
Pond Mountain is a spectacular 1,795-acre tract in Ashe County encompassing the entire top of the 5,000-foot-tall mountain. It will be purchased for the NC Wildlife Resources Commission Game Lands Program, managed under conservation guidelines to protect its significant natural resources and to enhance wildlife and fisheries habitat. Pond Mountain will provide public access for passive recreation and for forestry, scientific and educational purposes. It boasts rare bog habitat, fine viewing opportunities and protection of the New River’s water quality. With your help we can save this magnificent property and create extensive conservation and recreational opportunities
