Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

The NC-ROCK Community Organizes the Trad-athlon 2008 Fund-raiser for the Access Fund

A fund-raising benefit for The Access Fund, Trad-athlon 2008, will be hosted by the Triangle Rock Club in Morrisville, NC, on March 29, 2008.

Two-person teams will compete against the clock in four individual and team events . These events will address the essential traditional (trad) climbing skills of rappel setting and descent, ascending ropes using friction knots, escaping a belay, and trad lead protection setting and rope management. Competition sponsors of the Trad-athlon 2008 are Great Outdoor Provision Co., Fox Mountain Guides and Climbing School, REI, and SMC. Additional support has been provided by Townsend Bertram & Co. and Integrated Massage Solutions.

Other fun activities will include slack lining, Tyrolean traverse, silent auction of climbing gear and apparel, and door prizes. The Rail Readers, a hard driving blue grass band out of Carrboro, will be performing live throughout the evening.

While the competition will be challenging the evening’s emphasis will be on fun for all, competitors and spectators alike. Join in as a competitor, have a ball, and win some prizes. If you’re not competing there’s still plenty of fun in store for all - cheer on the competitors, try a Tyrolean traverse, slackline, win a door prize or two, take home terrific booty from the silent auction and enjoy great blue grass music.

There will be no admission charge for spectators.

Students at Martin Middle School are headed for the top of the world. With the help of interactive technology from MCNC, Cisco, and Arch Rock Corp, Martin Middle School students will stay connected to mountaineer and local Cisco engineer Ciprian “Chip” Popoviciu as he attempts to climb Everest this spring. The students here at Raleigh’s local middle school met Chip and his support team at an assembly this morning, March 10th. Chip will be supported by his Cisco associate, Tim Woods, who will coordinate base camp communications. Chip will also be monitored by Dr. Jay Stevens, M.D. Dr. Stevens is the President and Chief Medical Officer of the American Institute of Healthcare and Fitness. In the photo we see Chip and Dr. Stevens sharing with students about the equipment that is necessary to keep a climb safe in such extreme Alpine conditions. presented by PATAGONIA

FREE Slide Shows & Films presented by PATAGONIA
The Garage 110 West 7th Street, Downtown Winston-Salem Arts District
Every Thursday at 7pm January 4th-25th

January 4: Patagonia Paddling Ambassador, Jon Bowermaster
OCEANS 8 Project: Since 1999, Jon and his expedition teams have been sea kayaking around the world one continent at a time, studying both the health of the seas and the lives of people who depend on them – plus having a fair amount of adventure along the way. Having completed seven of the eight expeditions, with only Antarctica to go, this promises to be a captivating tale, with awe-inspiring imagery, of his adventures thus far.

January 11: Alaska Night with Rich and Lisa Chisholm and Rod Hunter
Two Views of Denali: This pair of videos, narrated by Rich and Lisa Chisholm, feature Denali, the highest peak in North America The first chronicles an endurance climb of the West Buttress in 2004. The second details a steep alpine-style ascent of the West Rib in 2005. This evening presentation will be followed by a question and answer session, including tips on how to get started in mountaineering.

Grizzlies in the Wild: If you’ve ever wanted to get close to wild grizzlies – without threat to life and limb – this is your chance. In this film, Rod Hunter recounts his July 2006 backpacking trek through Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve, a rugged coastal region known for its volcanoes, pristine waterways and large, animated bears, including an 800-pounder frolicking in a mud bath. Come early or stay late to meet members of the local Sierra Club chapter. They’ll have information on current campaigns and how you can get involved.

January 25: Randy Jacinto
Refresh Your Perspective: With no itinerary and no expectations, Randy Jacinto explores Southeast Asia by bicycle, just embracing impulse, the beauty of different cultures and living a surreal adventure.

February 8: Jeff Brewer & John Pugh
From Mountains to Sea: What is a thousand miles long and two-feet wide? It’s North Carolina’s Mountains to Sea Trail (MST), the state’s first and only linear, multi-use trail stretching from Clingman’s Dome in Great Smoky Mountains National Park to Jockey’s Ridge State Park on the Outer Banks. Follow Jeff for a photographic tour of his fall 2003 thru-hike. You’ll also learn where construction and maintenance work is taking place on the MST, and how you can help. » MORE INFO

John Pugh (GOPC Staff) will be presenting a slideshow from his 2175 mile Southbound Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2000. Slideshow will be followed by a AT Prep Overview (he will have his pack!) and Q/A session. This is a great event for aspiring Thru-Hikers, past AT hikers or those who love the outdoors! » MORE INFO
