The North Carolina Wildlife Federation honored Great Outdoor Provision Co. as the recipient of the 2010 Governor’s Conservation Achievement Award a recognition given annually to individuals, governmental bodies, organizations and others who have exhibited an unwavering commitment to conservation in North Carolina.

These are the highest natural resource honors given in the state. The Governor’s Award stated honored Great Outdoor Provision Co. as Business Conservationist of the Year and stated :

“From local land trusts to Boy Scout troops, from the Mountains-to-the-Sea Trail to local rescue mission, the Great Outdoor Provision Company gives back to North Carolina, embodying the best of local ownership, entrepreneurship, and investment in the lives of its customers. Founded in 1972, the company now has seven stores in seven North Carolina cities.”

We are excited to announce new GOPC Kayak Fishing Team member, Gwen Crabtree:

Gwen resides in Charlotte where he is the assistant manager and paddlesports manager for the Charlotte location of Great Outdoor Provision Co. While Gwen has fished for as long as he can remember, he’s relatively new to the sport of kayak fishing having purchased his first fishing kayak about a year ago. However, don’t let his relative newness to the sport fool you. Gwen has entered four kayak fishing tournaments in the past year and recently won the North Carolina Kayak Fishing (www.nckfa.com) Battle in the ‘Boro fly fish division. Terra Nova has smashed the Guinness World Record for the lightest commercially available tent, with the Laser Ultra 1. The company recently received confirmation that the tent, which weighs just over 21 ounces (600 grams), is now the record holder. It snatches the title from the Terra Nova Laser Photon, trimming over 7 ounces (200 grams) or around 26% off the record in the process.

Terra Nova was awarded the Guinness World Record for the Lightest Tent Commercially Available for the first time in 2004. The Terra Nova Laserlite was a one person tent weighing just over 35.2 ounces (1 kilogram), the same weight as a bag of sugar. Seven years and four Guinness World Records later, the Laser Ultra 1 weighs nearly half of that.
The Laser Ultra 1 has been designed for short duration ultra events. Although its style follows that of the popular Laser tent range developed by Terra Nova, the most striking difference is the color; the silver translucent Ultra fabric used for the flysheet is incredibly lightweight but strong.

The Laser Ultra 1 tent won a Gold European IF Design Award when it was launched to the trade in July 2010 at the Outdoor Show in Friedrichshafen, Germany.

Managing Director, Andy Utting said, ‘It is great to see our investment in new technologies paying off. When we launched the Laser Lite, people were sceptical of the robustness of such lightweight tents, seven years later, a single person tent has to be less than 35.2 ounces (1 kilogram) to be considered light, and our designs have become the blue print for the competition.’
