Commander 120 Feature Overview Video

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Due to numerous requests, we’ve re-shot some video of the new Wilderness Systems Commander 120 to make it easier to see more of the cool features of this interesting boat. Join Gwen Crabtree (our Charlotte shop’s Boat Department Manager) and Tony Turner (the Wilderness Systems Factory Rep) as they go over some of the key features of the Commander 120. Also note that we are currently running a special promotion on the Commander 120, which Gwen will also cover in the video.

Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

borntorun.jpgby Christopher McDougall

Full of incredible characters, amazing athletic achievements, cutting-edge science, and, most of all, pure inspiration, Born to Run is an epic adventure that began with one simple question: Why does my foot hurt? In search of an answer, Christopher McDougall sets off to find a tribe of the world’s greatest distance runners and learn their secrets, and in the process shows us that everything we thought we knew about running is wrong.

Isolated by the most savage terrain in North America, the reclusive Tarahumara Indians of Mexico’s deadly Copper Canyons are custodians of a lost art. For centuries they have practiced techniques that allow them to run hundreds of miles without rest and chase down anything from a deer to an Olympic marathoner while enjoying every mile of it. Their superhuman talent is matched by uncanny health and serenity, leaving the Tarahumara immune to the diseases and strife that plague modern existence. With the help of Caballo Blanco, a mysterious loner who lives among the tribe, the author was able not only to uncover the secrets of the Tarahumara but also to find his own inner ultra-athlete, as he trained for the challenge of a lifetime: a fifty-mile race through the heart of Tarahumara country pitting the tribe against an odd band of Americans, including a star ultramarathoner, a beautiful young surfer, and a barefoot wonder.

With a sharp wit and wild exuberance, McDougall takes us from the high-tech science labs at Harvard to the sun-baked valleys and freezing peaks across North America, where ever-growing numbers of ultrarunners are pushing their bodies to the limit, and, finally, to the climactic race in the Copper Canyons. Born to Run is that rare book that will not only engage your mind but inspire your body when you realize that the secret to happiness is right at your feet, and that you, indeed all of us, were born to run.

Coat Swap 2009
During the first week of October locally owned Great Outdoor Provision Co. reached out to community missions and delivered coats for the homeless during the 5th Annual Great Outdoor Coat Swap. Customers who donated a clean used jacket received a discount off the regular price of a new jacket. This year’s Coat Swap delivered nearly 1000 jackets to the needy.

“I’ve always known our customers are special.” comments Tom Valone, owner. “Every time we sponsor a charity drive our and customers come through, I’m reminded why I love this business.”

Bruce Storer, director of development for the Raleigh Rescue Mission in downtown Raleigh, remarks on last year’s Coat Swap and says “It’s a significant gift. This is the time of year that we really need coats as well as food and blankets. We’re blessed to have this relationship with Great Outdoor Provision Co.”

Fun outdoor games from Ogo Sport

ogo_sport_games.jpg

Ogo Sport Copter Dart Game – A simple toss and score game that involves throwing a Foam Dart onto a target. The Foam Dart has fins that fold into the dart when thrown up into the air and when the dart falls, the fins unfold and the dart spirals slowly to the ground. The idea is to make the Foam dart land on the high visibility target, which folds into it’s own pouch for storage. While trying to make the dart land on the target is certainly challenging, just tossing this spinning Foam Dart around was loads of fun!

Ogo Sport Mini Super Sport Disc - One of the most simple yet engaging outdoor toys we’ve seen in a long time. The Mini Sport Disc is a small 12? diameter disc with a tight and stretchy membrane in the center. This membrane is so springy that you can use it to bounce a small object (such as the included rubber ball) up to 150 feet! The basic idea is a game of catch but the possibilities are only limited by one’s imagination.

Both of these games from Ogo Sport are addictive and will also get you some exercise while outdoors.

South Fork of the Catawba

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Brian and I decided to take a trip to the South Fork of the Catawba River to check out the new canoe/kayak access recently opened by the Catawba River Keepers. We loaded up the Wilderness System Ride 135 and the Wilderness System Tarpon 100 with our fishing gear and headed out to fish and enjoy a crisp fall day on the water.

The recent rains had muddied the river up more than we would have liked but we still hoped the fish would cooperate some for us. The parking area at the put in is small, but well-maintained and includes an informational board with details about the river and the local area. Part of the access areas also overlaps the Carolina Thread Trail and includes some trails near the river. The boat launch is a bit steep, but it is well built and includes steps to assist boaters with launching their canoe or kayak.

Most of the 5.5 miles is beginner friendly; however there are a few shoaly areas that might have to be portaged during low water and might present a hazard during high water. Boaters should be cautioned that the take-out, located river right just past the I-85 bridge, is steep and could present some problems for folks getting their boats off the water. Boaters are also cautioned not to paddle beyond the take out due to a low head damn just downstream. The South Fork of the Catawba offers plenty of opportunities to view wildlife and wet a fishing line and it’s a place we plan on returning to in the future.
